Arkansas 2011

Last week I went to Arkansas for the first time to explore our family roots. My Uncle Sonny has done an enormous amount of research on the Phillips/Clark side of the family and he was our tour guide. Arkansas was very beautiful and I learned so much about my mom's side of the family and where they came from. Below are some of my favorite pictures from the trip.

I've never seen rolled hay, only square.

Read Across America Week

This past week was Read Across America Week, when we celebrate literacy and Dr. Seuss' birthday. It's one of my favorite weeks at school because there are a lot of activities, dress up days and guest readers, as well as a bulletin board contest. It's a very busy week, but it is also a lot of fun!
The Kindergarten bulletin board. We won 1st place!

Monday the teachers and staff dressed up in their favorite Dr. Seuss outfits and the kids made Dr. Seuss hats.

Tuesday was dress like you favorite Literacy Character Day. I was the panda from the children's book "Panda Bear, Panda Bear, What Do You See", my co-worker Kristina was the brown bear from "Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See" and Jen was the polar bear from "Polar Bear, Polar Bear, Who Do You Hear" all written by Bill Martin & Eric Carle. Some of the kids also came to school dressed up as the favorite book characters. Room 21 also made more Dr. Seuss hats.

Wednesday was "Nerd" day (because Dr. Seuss created the word nerd), but I decided to have "Wacky Wednesday" instead. Some of the kids wore silly outfits and we made wacky hats.

All week the school had guest readers. Room 21 was lucky to have our local weatherman, a manager from the Vons supermarket (who brought all of us waters, apples & granola bars), a female football player and a firefighter. BUT our favorite guest reader was Mr. Nick! The kids love Nick, especially since he just went to the zoo with us, so they were very excited that he came to read to room 21. He read 3 book and the kids loved it!

Friday was the 100th day of school, so we invited the families to come to class and make art projects with us. In the afternoon we made special necklaces with 100 pieces of "O"cereal and also made 100th day hats. I wore a special shirt, made all by myself that had 100 pom-poms on it.

The week was super fun and reminded me of how awesome my job can be.

Palm Springs Weekend

Katie, Paul, Nick and I went to Palm Springs for the weekend. The weather was beautiful, around 80 degrees. Dad was down from northern California for a bicycle race, so it was was the perfect place to meet him. We drove into town just in time to meet up with Dad at the finish line. He rode approximately 60 miles through the Palm Springs and Palm Desert. While Dad rested, the 4 of us walked around downtown Palm Springs and did some window shopping. After, we picked up Dad and the 5 of us had a fun dinner. Sunday morning we meet up for breakfast before Dad got on the road.

After we checked out of the hotel we decided to ride the Palm Spring Areal Tram. We traveled more than 10,000 ft up the side of the mountain in 10 minutes. The top of the mountain was covered in snow and the weather was about 50 degrees. We did some hiking through the snow, as well as some "sledding". It was really beautiful at the top of the mountain.
